Freight density calculator
Density — pounds per cubic foot — is the number that decides your freight class for most shipments. Enter your pallet below to get cubic feet, density, and an estimated class in real time.
Calculate your freight class
How density is calculated
Density is your shipment’s weight divided by the space it occupies:
- Cubic feet = (length × width × height in inches ÷ 1,728) × number of pieces
- Density = total weight ÷ total cubic feet
Measure to the extreme points of the freight — including the pallet and any overhang — because that’s what the carrier measures on the dock. Rounding your dimensions down is a common cause of a reweigh and reclass later.
From density to class
Higher density means a lower class and a lower cost per pound. A shipment around 15–22.5 lbs/ft³ typically lands at class 70, while very light freight under 1 lb/ft³ can reach class 400–500. See the full breakdown in what is freight class?
Note that some commodities carry a fixed NMFC class regardless of density — when in doubt, quote it and an Armstrong specialist can confirm the correct class before you book.
